COMMERCIAL BOAT QUALIFICATIONS
All passenger boat operators, whether commercial or voluntary, have a responsibility to ensure that their skippers are competent. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is the regulatory body which ensures that both the vessels and its crew are competent, and for vessels carrying more than 12 passengers, skippers must hold the appropriate MCA Boatmaster Licence and the vessel must have an appropriate Passenger Certificate.

Passenger vessels that carry 12 or less passengers operate under a voluntary code of practice. Top Lock Training offers a range of courses suitable for skippers of passenger boats operating on Category A & B waters. The Inland Waters Helmsman Certificate and the National Community Boat Association’s Certificate of Community Boat Management are both listed as acceptable in the MCA Inland Waters Small Passenger Boat Code. Our Boatmaster Course prepares skippers for the MCA Boatmaster Tier 2 Examination.

Our MCA New Boatmaster Tier 2 Course (NBML T2), which replaces the old Boatmaster Grade 3, prepares students for their examination. This course has been developed in a modular format to cater for the needs of candidates with differing requirements. The NBML T2 now requires supporting proof of service & practical competence in the form of a completed Service Record & Task Record Book and also the completion of Ancillary Safety Training. Top Lock Training can provide the exact training and/or support that clients need in preparation for their NBML T2 examination. All our Boatmaster Courses are either MCA approved or accepted alternatives.

Our courses are supported by personalised work folders, which are a useful document for future reference. Training is normally carried out using our vessels & premises, where we provide lunch and refreshments during the sessions. Training can be undertaken on client’s vessels & premises provided that appropriate facilities are available.
